A Great Big World - "Say Something"

I've heard for the first time which pissed me off, opened old wounds, and was simply great. It's one of those instances where (artist I'm sure you've gone through this) you hear a song that is extremely close to one you were thinking of writing and you get that feeling of, damn this guy beat me to it! (Not that it would change anything if I did write something like this since only 5 people know my music even exist).

Anyways, When I first listened to the opening chords I was already disappointed in the writing although It wouldn't have been so bad if it weren't for the never changing top note that you hear consistently plugging away. Of course you can't judge a book by it's cover or introduction, so of course I stuck around to hear if this would wither change, if the song would go in a different direction, or the vocals are really good. Turned out the latter was true and does the added benefit of moving into a richer progression.

It went from seemingly stale to interesting pretty quickly even though the chord progression remained the same. The voice and the melody it follows works magic for the song and I interpret the chords as the feeling of limbo during a very rough patch in a relationship. So all in all, this song blew me away and was the "slow song" equivalent to a rock intro that starts with one clean guitar then explodes with the "in your face" overdrive sound, thick bass, and punch of the kick drum.

I think I may cover this song in my own way. Great job A Great Big World!

  1. I love this song, there's a really great choreography performance done to an edited version of it. http://youtu.be/WZ80BnxohOI
